10 Things to Know about Kendal-Crosslands Communities

Kendal-Crosslands Communities was founded in 1973, with a generous grant from the Philadelphia Annual Meeting of the Society of Friends with the goal to create a community that would help transform the experience of aging. Now, 47 years later, Kendal-Crosslands Communities has grown and changed, but we’ve never lost sight of that central mission. We know when you meet our dynamic and engaged residents, you’ll understand immediately that this is not your “typical” retirement community!

Here are some basic facts about us, to give you just a taste of why we’re different, and we hope you’ll take the next step to find out more about us as you consider your own retirement living options:

1. Kendal-Crosslands Communities are made up of four different communities.

We have two Continuing Care Retirement Communities, now known as Life Plan Communities, Kendal at Longwood and Crosslands. We also have two 50+ communities, Coniston and Cartmel.

2. The 500 acre campus includes a certified Arboretum.

The arboretum includes over 400 labeled trees. In April of 2020, Mike Dunn inventoried our trees, and found there are over 2500 trees in the landscaped areas of campus alone. (That does not include the trees in the wooded areas of campus). An estimated 100 trees are added every year, as part of our commitment to environmental stewardship and protecting our watershed.

3. Kendal-Crosslands Communities is also a Certified Wildlife Habitat, and has over 11 miles of walking and hiking trails.

4. Kendal-Crosslands Communities has over 500 employees.

5. Both Kendal at Longwood and Crosslands have their own libraries– open 24 x 7!

Between the two libraries, there are over 20,000 items for residents to check out. The libraries are also affiliated with the County library system, giving residents access to books across the entire Chester County library system.

6. Both Crosslands and Kendal at Longwood recently installed charging stations for electric cars on both campuses!

One of our core Quaker-based values is stewardship- our responsibility to be good stewards of our environment and community as a whole. Our electric car charging station is just one of the many environmentally-friendly aspects of our community that encourages reducing our carbon footprint together.

7. Residents can move into Kendal at Longwood or Crosslands as young as 65 years old.

While you can move into Kendal at Longwood to Crosslands once you turn 65, most of our residents join the community in their early 70’s. You can move into either of our 50 + communities, Coniston or Cartmel, once you reach 50.

8. People move to Kendal-Crosslands Communities from all over the Country–

and actually all over the world! We have residents who have lived in Ireland, Japan, the Philippines, California, New Mexico, and just about every other state in the union.  You can learn more about our residents by exploring their stories by clicking here.

9. Our Life Plan Communities have every level of care right on campus.

Both Kendal at Longwood and Crosslands have Resident Care, where you can be seen by a nurse practitioners, local physicians or specialists. All Personal Care and Skilled Nursing rooms are private.

10. There are currently 511 independent living cottages and apartments that make up Kendal at Longwood and Crosslands and another 74 homes that make up Coniston and Cartmel.

The most recent cottages and apartments added at Crosslands are Zero-Energy Ready Homes (ZERH) meaning they were designed and built to be environmentally-friendly. Solar panels have also been installed on several carports and on the roof of the new Woolman building as well.
