Independent Living – Life Plan Communities

Independent Living at Kendal at Longwood and Crosslands

Kendal at Longwood and Crosslands offer Independent Living cottages and apartments that come with Lifecare contracts, offering a full continuum of care for residents as they age.

Kendal at Longwood and Crosslands are not-for-profit Life Plan communities, that share adjoining campuses. Each community has its own Residents Association and governance, as well as its own amenities including dining rooms, library, aquatic center, health and wellness center, and more. Residents on each campus have access to everything on both campuses, doubling the number of classes, activities, amenities and opportunities for all residents.

Kendal at Longwood

Kendal at Longwood is celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2023. Our community is modeled after English villages, designed to help promote community and togetherness. Residents can walk to the community center via covered walkways to help ensure safety in all weather.

You can get to Kendal at Longwood just off US Route 1/Baltimore Pike, less than a mile from the entrance to one of the world’s greatest public gardens, Longwood Gardens.

Kendal at Longwood has 250 cottages and a wide variety of floor plans available, from studio cottages to two-bedroom with den cottages. Most cottages have covered patios and three-season rooms, and some select homes even have wood-burning fireplaces.

Crosslands was designed to provide open views of nature and surrounding woodlands and meadows. Our Community is located off of Route 926 between Route 52 and Parkersville Road, and celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2022. Crosslands offers 260 cottages and apartments in a variety of floor plans, many within a comfortable walk to the Community Center. Walking to the Community Center is a great way to enjoy nature including birds, wildlife and 400 varieties of trees that are part of our Accredited Arboretum.

Our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is evident in the new construction on our campus. The new apartments in the Woolman building were added in 2022, and are certified Zero Energy Ready Homes. They are at least 40-50% more energy efficient than typical new homes. Solar panels were also recently added to further reduce our carbon footprint.

Homes have three-season rooms or patios that help bring the stunning natural surroundings even closer. Our two-story apartment buildings are located closer to the Community Center, for convenience.

What is a Life Plan Community?

Life Plan Communities, formerly called Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC), are designed to offer independent living for those 65 and older, with a guarantee of future health care that may be needed as residents age. Lifecare means that as residents age, they will have access to Personal Care, often referred to as Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing with little or no increase in the monthly fee other than inflationary adjustments with our Traditional Contract. Every level of care is included right on campus, which means you never have to worry about what happens if you need assistance in the future.
